What kinds of skin warts are common and how can you get rid of them?

There are many types of skin warts caused by strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV) virus. Some known types include;

Common Warts (Verruca vulgaris); These warts typically show up on the fingers, hands and knees. They are often rough, raised and might resemble cauliflower.

Plantar Warts; These warts form on the soles of the feet. They can be quite painful when walking. They may appear flat, due to, pressure from standing and walking.

Flat Warts (Verruca plana); These warts are small, smooth and flat topped. They commonly appear in clusters on the face, neck, hands or knees.

Filiform Warts; These warts have a thread-like or finger-like appearance and usually occur on the face around the mouth, nose or eyes.

Genital Warts; These warts are sexually transmitted, appear in the genital and anal areas. They can be small or large, flat or raised occurring singly or in groups.

Treatment options, vary based on their type, location and severity.
Here are some common ways to get rid of warts;

  1. Over the counter remedies; You can use products, like compound W that contain salicylic acid, you apply it directly on the wart to help it disappear gradually.
  2. Freezing therapy; Liquid nitrogen is used in cryotherapy to freeze the wart causing it to form a blister and eventually fall off. Healthcare providers usually perform this procedure.
  3. Prescription drugs; Sometimes a doctor may prescribe oral medications to treat warts, especially genital warts.
  4. Surgical removal; For stubborn warts surgical procedures like excision, laser surgery or electrosurgery may be needed for removal.
  5. Immunotherapy; This method involves boosting the bodys system to combat the virus for the wart. Treatments may include injecting antigens into the wart or using medications.

Keep in mind that some warts may need multiple treatments for removal and they can come back even after successful treatment. It’s crucial to seek advice from a healthcare professional before trying to remove warts especially if they are, in sensitive or delicate areas or if you have underlying health conditions.
